Shards are the currency used in the world of Vulpin Adventure. They can be obtained by defeating Monsters, selling items (like Equipment) in the Shop, and investigating Item Droppers in the backgrounds of the various locations the player and their Vulpin explore. The number of Shards a player has can be found at the top of the screen, next to their Vulpin's Mana Point counter.
The name "Shards" is a colloquial fan-name, as there is no official in-game mention of what this form of money is actually called. However, due to the fact that they are shaped like shards of crystal, it is easy to see where the name came from.
There are different colours of Shards, and each of these adds a different total to the amount of money the player currently has. The further the player progresses in the game, the more valuable the Shards in the area tend to become.
